It is proposed to investigate the influence of rapid carbonation, using super-critical carbon dioxide, on the long-term durability of glass fibre reinforced cement. Cement pastes will be subjected to rapid carbonation and characterised with regard to dimensional stability, water content, pore solution composition,porosity and the nature and microstructure of the gold phases. Such studies should provide an understanding of the mechanisms of rapid carbonation and the optimum processing parameters required for successful application. Composites will be made using ordinary Portland cement and standard and alkali-resistant glass fibres. After rapid carbonation they will be aged by storing under water at 20 and 65 degC, using a cyclic wetting and drying regime. After specified times the tensile stress-strain relationship will be determined and values of strength and toughness calculated. The microstructure of the composites will be investigated at corresponding times. Comparison of mechanical behaviour with microstructure should lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms governing engineering property changes in grc with time.
