This prject advances a new global design paradigm for hotmills using a coordinated control frameowkr in which are embedded advanced regulator designs. The novel contributions of the proposal include the establishment of the physical basis of the coordinated control hierarchy for hot strip finishing mills, the determination of industry based benchmarks for demonstrating quality improvement and guidelines for determining the best combination of coordinated control and advanced regular designs to be used. The coordinate control framework will be based on Model Based Predictive Control methods which enable the all important use of physical and operational constraints.At the regulator level, the novel and first ever application of QFT to manufacturing problems will be pursued. This will be used to enhance the robustness of a basic H-inf design to parametric uncertainty. The particular application to the gauge control loop will be of interest here. The coordinated control structure will also be the means by which advanced regulator designs (H-2, H-inf etc) will be assessed for quality improvement. The project is supported by an industrial consortium comprising, Alcan International, British Steel, CEGELEC and Kvaerner Metals.
