Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim of the project is to improve the prediction of the deformation of reinforced concrete members with time. Information from recent research suggests that current methods predict the behaviour of tension zones (tension stiffening) inadequately and this aspect of behaviour will be concentrated on. It is proposed to carry out a major series of long-term tension tests at the University of Leeds, together with some more detailed tests with strain gauged reinforcement at the University of Durham. Parameters to be investigated will be: reinforcement percentage, concrete stress, concrete strength, arrangement of reinforcement and load history. Confirmatory slab tests will also be carried out, together with additional tests to monitor creep and shrinkage of the concretes used. Tests will be carried out on both normal and high strength concrete. Parallel computer modelling studies will be carried out by Arups.
