Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal aims to formulate, assess the fire performance of and mathematically model flame and heat resistant rigid composites in which part of the reinforcing element is an efficient, char-promoting intumescent-containing fabric. Recent and continuing research shows that selected intumescent-flame retardant fibre combinations give rise to the formation of a char barrier which is significant in quantity and has considerable oxidation resistance at temperatures upto 1200oC in air. The proposal describes how experimental composites will be produced and tested for mechanical and fire resistance properties. The latter will use simultaneous DTA-TGA upto 1200oC coupled will mass loss calorimetric studies at heat fluxes upto 75kW/m*. Composite structural and fire performance data will be incorporated into a predictive mathematical model to describe their behaviour. Successful achievement of these objectives will point the way to significantly improving fire performance of conventional composite.
