Summary on Grant Application Form
The research proposed here examines the fundamental motion of axisymmetric currents in a system rotating around a vertical axis, by both theoretical and experimental means. This is a continuation of a previous study by the proposers which provided a significant progress of the knowledge on the Coriolis influence on gravity currents (including the development of numerical and asymptotical tools for simulation) but also identified some intriguing issues which will be further investigated with the aid of the above mentioned tools and novel large scale experiments, in particular the reverse motion after the attainment of the maximal spread, the formulation and assessment of a box-model and the improvement of the Coriolis-affected nose-condition. The results, which will enhance the understanding and improve the predictive capability of these phenomena, will be published as refereed journal papers.
