A consortium of academic and industrial scientists seeks to exploit the high spatial resolution and wide dynamic sensitivity of stray field magnetic resonance imaging for a collaborative research programme that aims to test the basis of current understanding of how degradation, solvent absorption stress, chain entanglement and polymer interfaces influence polymer and solvent dynamics. Two primary research goals are (i) to understand absorption of good and bad solvents in polymers that contain residual amounts of solvent and (ii) to understand the interplay between liquid and vapour transport during water diffusion in aggregates of hydrophilic polymers. A third goal is to explore how film thickness and interfaces influence chain dynamics in thin film polymer melts. The programme includes work in technique development that will improve the capability of STRAFI for this proposed research and for related industrial investigations. A post-doctoral research assistant is required to maintain the existing STRAFI facility, to carry out technique development and to co-ordinate the research led by the various applicants. The proposed programme will ensure that the UK stays at the forefront of technology in developing STRAFI and applying it to polymers and materials.
