Summary on Grant Application Form
Polymer Processing is an important area of manufacturing; modelling of the deformation and flow of these non-linear viscoelastic materials is a challenging, interdisciplinary activity (e.g. across mechanical and chemical engineering, physics, mathematics, and in reacting systems, chemistry disciplines), yet one for which there is no coherence in the UK. This network will rectify this, providing a stronger national identity in the UK. there is a perceived and increasing requirement for CAE in manufacturing, and in particular here, in polymer processing. Modelling underpins all aspect of continuos and batch processing of polymers, and it is particularly timely to form such a network as modelling is at the threshold of dull 3-d analyses and it is recognized that the present heavy dependence on Engineering of the full manufacturing process, i.e. modelling of processing, linked with product performance modelling. The proposed network will strengthen and extend existing links and develop new ones across discipline boundaries. The full range of polymer processing operations is represented by the collaborators. The network will also maintain an 'open door' policy to all interested UK researchers.
