There is general widespread agreement that strategically and operationally managers have to confront, understand and manage complex, ambiguous and turbulent organizational issue. The aim of the proposed network is to establish inter-industry, inter-university, multi-disciplinary research which will address the issue of manufacturing complexity and in particular operational complexity and the study of manufacturing system as complex adaptive systems. Manufacturing organisations and the decision making processes that occur within them can be modelled as complex adaptive systems. The argument for treating and studying manufacturing systems as complex systems is that complexity has an integral role in the operation and behaviour of the organisation. That is, the parameters and agents which has an integral role in the operation and behaviour of the organisation. That is, that parameters and agents which govern the manufacturing organisation are responsible for the system interacting, learning , modifying and evolving. Each of these issues is of importance to managers who are faced with the responsibility of managing, controlling and developing manufacturing organisations. The discipline of manufacturing systems and manufacturing management will be at the core of the network and will integrate with the following disciplines: mathematics, biology, computing, philosophy, organizational science and physics. The network will develop and sustain working partnerships so that mangers can improve operational and strategic decision making.
