One of the most critical features of the cement used in the construction of oilwells is its thickening time. After this time the cement cannot be pumped as a fluid. Thickening time is controlled by the chemistry of cement hydration and its interaction with retarder chemicals added to the slurry. We will study in detail the hydration of oilwell cement, using the reaction-diffusion equations that govern the behaviour of the various ions involved. We have access to experimental data with which to compare our theoretical predictions, and can thereby validate our model. The aim of the project is to gain a better uderstanding, both qualitative and quantitative, of the hydration of oilwell cement. The project will be part funded by Rugby Cement, who will be able to improve their quality control procedures in the light of our results.
