The primary aim of the project is to develop computational procedures based on a combined finite/discrete element methodology in order to provide an industry standard simulation capablity to aid decision making in the design of shot peening and peen forming operations. In the first stage of the project, small scale modelling will be undertaken to examine some fundamental aspects of shot peening mechanisms and to perform sensitivity studies on process parameters such as the effect of shot hardness, shot breakage, impact velocity and incidence angle, local curvature of the peened component, thermal coupling effects. In the second stage of the project large scale finite/discrete element modelling will be undertaken of both shot peeingin and peen forming processes. Throughout the project, and in collaboration with the industrual partners, an extensive programme of experimental validation will be undertaken. This will include (i) a series of laboratory tests on simple components in which the materials and shot peenign process parameters will be varied (ii) 'real size' industrial components supplied by the collaborators. In this way, the presently available heuristically based shot techniques will be supplemented by a scientific approach based on an industry standard simulation capability.
