Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is to investigate combining recent breakthroughs in light-emitting polymer displays and conductive lithographic (CLFs). Light emitting polymers combine novels semiconducting electronic properties with the favourable processing properties of polymers. They have great potential for flat panel displays with excellent veiwing angle, contrast and visibility. It has been demonstrated that they can be made on flexible substrates, offering the prospect of easily manufactured flexible displays.CLFs are made by a novel fabrication process for electronics in which a lithographic printing press is used to deposit conductive ink onto a range of flexible substrates. This enables very high volume, low cost production of electronic circuits. In this project we will investigate combining CLFs and light-emitting polymers. The result could open important new directions in the manufacturing and application of light-emitting displays which are flexible, easy to manufacture, patterned by a simple printing process , low cost, and lightweight.CLFs with a range of work functions will be formulated and studies as both electron and hole injecting contacts. The electrical properties of contacts between CLFs and semiconducting polymers will be investigated and a range of light-emitting diode structures will be fabricated and characterised.
