Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose a programme of magnetotransport measurements to investigate the mechanisms which govern current carrying properties of high-Tc superconducting materials. The high specifications of our 5T magnetotransport rig, based on a QUID picovoltmeter, will be employed to study these mechanisms in great detail and over a wide range of voltages. These measurements will be complemented by conventional magnetotransport methods in our lab (up to 16T) and at the Grenoble High Magnetic Field Laboratory (up to 30T). Measurements on single crystals, to investigate the underlying principles, will be combined with detailed studies of materials for high current applications (meltgrown YBCO and PIT tapes) for which we will investigate the role of surfaces, grain boundaries and the nature of the pinning centres.
