Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal addresses the development of an inspection technique for two related but difficult industrial inspection problems. The first is the detection of corrosion in the tendons or voids in the grout in post-tensioned concrete bridges; the second is the detection of defects in rock bolts in mines. The principle of the inspection technique is to excite ultrasonic waves which travel along the tendon or bolt and the to detect reflections from the defects. The proposal exploits the very similar technical features of the two problems, so maximising the potential benefits of the programme. Preliminary studies of both problems have indicated that the technique is likely to be successful. The research will identify clearly the feasibility, range of applicability and limitations. The physics of wave propagation and reflections from defects and from other normally occurring features will be understood and the optimum wave modes and testing parameters will be identified. The instrumentation requirements and methodology for routine inspection will be specified. The optimum testing configuration wil be demonstrated, primarily on idealised structures in the laboratory but also in situ. If viable, it is expected that the findings will provide a sufficient basis for commercial development of testing instrumentation and protocols.
