Summary on Grant Application Form |
The purpose of the proposed research programme is to establish a state-of-the-art laboratory-based single-crystal and angle-dispersive powder-diffraction facilities for high-pressure crystal structure studies. These facilities will be used for a range of facilities for a range of projects on a variety of materials which have outstanding interest at both an applied and fundamental level. We propose to study: boron, boron carbide and the boron pnictides; the transition-metal dichaloogenides; the ternary semiconductors; zirconium, ziroonia and zirconium hydride; zinc and cadmium; polar small molecule solids; and the copper halides. This research programme will also establish new facilities for simultaneous high-pressure and high-temperature structural work which is expected to be crucial systems, such as the ternary semiconductors, where the phase transition kinetics are likely to be slow and where the phase transition includes strain in the sample. The work at high temperature will also allow the detailed study of phase diagrams and the relative stability of metastable phases.
