Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose a scientific meeting focused on the effective representation of cellularity within the mathematical models of biology and medicine. Recent experimental data indicates that the discreteness of biological cells is a key ingredient in a wide range of biomedical phenomena, while traditional mathematical models use continuum averages, thereby neglecting this discreteness. A number of modelling approaches reflecting this discreteness have been introduced in recent years, however these are generally based on the mathematical expertise of the investigators rather than having a biological rationale. This meeting will bring together mathematical modellers from a range of backgrounds and experimentalists from selected areas of biology and medicine, in order to generate a coordinated series of modelling frameworks for cellular phenomena.
