Summary on Grant Application Form |
In a wide range of industrial applications, the state of a process or system has has to be tracked from imprecise measurements of related variables. Better tracking could be achieved if background information in the form of inequality constraints on the state or the measured system imputs were included. This is difficult, particularly if the behaviour is complicated eenough to require a flexible and detailed description of the uncertain state, such as its pdf. At present, no technique allows computationally efficient state tracking by updating the pdf subject to inequality constraints. The proposed research aims to combine and sugment existing techniques to make possible such efficient updating, with target tracking as motivating application. In conjunction with the Defence Evaluation and Res. Agency and Matra BAe Dynamic, a range of tracking scenarios will be tackled. Attention will also be paid to extracting information on the state (which inlcludes target positions and velocities), in a form suitable for interpretation and optimisation, for instance by action to improve observability or reachability of targets. As well as having commercial potential for aerospace application, progress on these fundamental problems can benefit monitoring of many other industrial processes. The project provides research training in the crucial area of software for real-time tracking of complex processes with fast dynamics.
