Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim is to establish an optical waveguide technique for exploring in detail the dynamical behaviour of the director structure within liquid crystal cells furing voltage switching, exploring in particular commercial cells using our recently developed fully leaky technique. This involves setting up a convergent beam system using the fully leaky guided mode geometry employing CCDs with a n ultimate time resolution of 3 microseconds to capture time-gated angle dependent reflectivity and transmissivity data from a range of liquid crystal cells. The large quantity of resultant data will be fitted automatically using our genetic algorithm based procedures.Once the system is set up and tested with fully modellable nematic structures we wish to go on to examine the more complex ferroelectric liquid crystal structures. This will establish the nature of the switching process in more detail than hitherto obtainable and allow tests of developing dynamical theory for the ferroelectric phase.
