Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed study is to indurate a feasibility study into the nature, and extent to which accessible environments for new buildings are considered at the briefing stage. Current research suggests that there is room for significant improvement at planning stage (Imrie 1996 for example) and at the completion stage (Holmes-Siedle 1996 for example). Little research has been undertaken to assess the impact of the briefing stage (where designer and client are at initial design stage) upon successful accessible environments. Current initiatives, formation of the centre for Accessible and Environments (1994), Disabled Discrimination Act (1995) for example suggest that the needs for accessible environments will become more important within our society. The proposed outcome for the research will be a suggestion for how current practice briefing may be improved and the proposed framework strategy will suggest how to further test this 'best practice' guide at other staged in the design process. It is planned that the research will be undertaken by a Research Assistant who is disabled thereby already having an understanding of disability issues.
