Summary on Grant Application Form |
It was identified that damping vessel is significantly different than for the intact vessel. However, so far there has not been any attempt to predict the damping of a damaged vessel due to the flooding and accumulation of water. The proposed research will attempt to measure and quantify the roll damping due to floodwater in compartments of the damaged ships during progressive flooding with the ultimate aim of improving the accuracy of the numerical simulations, currently being used to assess the survivability of damaged Passenger Ro-Ro ferries. An experimental technique will be developed for the purpose involving forced and free roll tests in calm water and in waves allowing for the effect of floodwater on roll damping to be accurately measured. The derived results calibrated and refined by using different test models will be formulated into a suitable form for use in improving the accuracy of the numerical predictions.
