From 1995 to 2000 the global demand for sub 30 Mwe power plants is expected to treble. Of the emerging technologies the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) has the greatest potential to be competitive against conventional systems. Internal reforming of natural gas within the SOFC is essential for cost competitive power generation by SOFCs. Such internal reforming presents a number of major problems which have yet to be overcome, in particular internal reforming directly on the nickel cermet anode tends to catalyse carbon formation, there are likely to be potential instabilities in the coupling between the exothermic fuel cell reaction and the endothermic steam reforming reaction, and finally self-sustained internal reforming is precluded during start up from cold and for operation at low power levels. This collaboration between Rolls-Royce, Keele University, Imperial College, ICI Katalco and Advanced Ceramics Ltd. seeks to study semi-indirect internal reforming modes which avoid the above difficulties, with the aim of developing stable internal reforming approaches for the full range of SOFC operating conditions, i.e. start up and zero power to dull load operation.
