Internal reforming is essential if the high efficiency of the integrated planar SOFC is to be realised. Tow approaches to internal catalytic steam reforming are explores based on the application of mass transfer restricted steam reforming catalytic and mixed conductor electrochemical membranes. Kinetic studies of steam reforming and partial oxidation of methane and natural gas will be performed mainly at Keele University to provide data for the development of steady-state models using a global optimisation approach which will include anode gas recycle and energy integration with the MEA assembly. The development of a suitable dynamic model of the integrated system will be initiated. Particular attention will be given to potential instabilities, which may arise from catalyst deactivation, low to full power operation etc in view of the limited control and high degree of energy integration. Models will be formulated in gPROMS, a modelling package developed in the Process Systems Engineering IRC.Materials for the application in electrochemical membrane natural gas steam reforming will be selected, synthesised and characterised at Imperial College.
