|
With the demographic trends re ageing and prevalence of disability and Government policies e.g. care in the community, there will be an increasing and inevitable strain on the resources, currently estimated at 350 million per annum, required to adapt public sector housing to meet future needs. Now solution may be found in the concept of Lifetime Homes. Lifetime Homes are designed according to a set of criteria developed to meet the changing needs of occupants. To date most of the analysis has been directed towards new build but existing stock may well be suitable for adaptation to Lifetime Homes. The aim of this proposal is to conduct a feasibility study to determine appropriate strategies for the practical and economical conversion of existing sock to Lifetime Holmes. The study will concentrate on accommodation provided and managed by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive which covers a wide range of dwelling. Data will be collected so as to identify the user needs over time and to enable characterization of the existing stock to assess its suitability for Lifetime Homes. A database of information will be produced on the findings and made accessible to the wider community.
