Summary on Grant Application Form
The long-term goal of our work is to develop algorithms and techniques that will enable efficient second-generation electronic commerce systems to be implemented. To achieve this long-term goal, we must design practical algorithms and protocols for automated negotiation. Such a long-term goal is beyond the scope of the three-year time-scale of the proposed project. Instead, we will carry out the programme of work described below, which represents a sound and feasible first step towards our ultimate goal.In summary, our principle aims for this three-year research programme are: To develop basic negotiation algorithms for electronic commerce scenarios, by using game-theoretic techniques, and in particular techniques from mechanism design; To compare and evaluate these algorithms with respect to their theoretical and demonstrated efficiency and stability, and investigate tractable heuristic approximation to these algorithms; To develop a prototype implementation of the best of these algorithms, and evaluate the effectiveness of this demonstrator.
