Summary on Grant Application Form |
Prototype testing of automotive catalytic converters is costly and time consuming and a desirable alternative would be a computer model capable of simulating light-off. Through a collaborative programme between industrial partners and Coventry University a model has been developed to simulate catalyst warm-up for steady flow conditions. However with the need to reduce light-off times catalysts are being positioned closer to the engine where the effect of flow pulsation's on heat/mass transfer could be significant. The aim of the proposed project is to develop and validate a model for catalyst light-off with pulsating flow. Coventry University will develop the model and conduct flow studies in a hot air rig for model validation. The industrial collaborators will supply specialist components, computer resources and conduct engine test bed studies for model validation against real engine data. The main project deliverable will be a calculation procedure for the simulation of light-off under pulsating flow conditions. Th potential benefits for the industrial collaborators will be the development of a design tool to optimise catalysts operating in a pulsating flow environment in order to reduce emissions, improve fuel economy, provide better utilisation of precious metal resources whilst offering the prospect of substantial savings in development costs.
