A properly constructed cladistic classification of manufacturing systems could help to elucidate mechanisms of evolution and thus be able to generate hypotheses about the characteristics and relationships of manufacturing systems which are a fundamental to their survival and their process of change. This, it is postulated that organisations cladograms could be used as a tool within a change framework for achieving successful organizational change. The proposal will be concerned with developing cladistics as a tool by primarily understanding and measuring the evolutionary mechanisms and the levels of complexity which result in change. The science of change management would be advanced and knowledge concerning the development and application of cladistic classifications would e advanced. The primary benefits to industry are the organisations, regardless of industrial sector, will now have an evolutionary analysis technique for determining where they have been and where they are now and relating this phylogenetic and situational analysis to information on cost and route theories, in order to determine coherent and appropriate action for imitation and more importantly innovation.
