Summary on Grant Application Form
Phonons 98 will be the latest in a series of triennial international conferences, which represent the major international forum on the physics and interactions of phonons (lattice vibrations). It is only the second conference in the series to be held in the UK, the first being at Nottingham back in 1975. The scientific scope will relate to a wide range of condensed matter physics, since phonons are involved in many important phenomena and processes which are of relevance to UK research. In order to maximise the value to UK scientists of having the conference in England, we should like to be able to offer at least 10 bursaries of 400 each to young British workers who could not otherwise attend, and at least 10 bursaries of 600 to overseas scientist, particularly to be able to invite outstanding physicists from the former Soviet Union to participate in the conference.
