We propose to study the Volterra integral operator T:Lp(IR+)Lp(IL+) given by (Tf)(x)=v(x)=x0u(t)f(t)dt, where u and v are weights. The object is to obtain sharp information about the behaviour of the approximation numbers of T by means of a combination of the techniques used recently by Solomyak and his co-authors and by Edmunds, Evans and Harris. In particular, it is hoped to obtain results in an Lp- setting (p2) which were previously known only when p=2.
