Summary on Grant Application Form |
The current standard for the design of temporary road signs to withstand wind loading is generally perceived by the road sign manufacturing industry to be unrealistic, in that very high wind induced forces are specified, and its provisions are this usually ignored. There is a need for obtaining realistic wind loading data, so that the code provisions can be made more realistic. In the past the only wind loading data that has been obtained has been from wind tunnel tests in which the overturning wind speeds of the signs have been measured. Now such tests do not properly simulate the wind conditions experienced by road signs, since large scale atmospheric turbulence is not simulated, and neither are the gust effects due to passing traffic. This research proposal is for a series of full scale tests using a number of different road sign shapes at sites with varying highway geometry and wind and traffic conditions. This data will be analysed to find appropriate force coefficients for the sign shapes, and these coefficients will then be used in the development of design guides.
