Summary on Grant Application Form
The rheological response of cubic phases formed in gels of surfactants or block copolymers will be modelled using two approaches. In the first, the stress-strain behaviour of the lattice planes is modelled in an analytical theory of coupled multilayers, which allows for layer slippage via a diffusional probability function. This model is expected to describe quantitatively both the linear and non-linear viscoelasticity of micellar cubic phases. In the case of bicontinuous cubic phases, we will also model the deformation of the minimal surface, which describes the location of the surfactant bilayer by considering the elastic modes of deformation of the cubic phases of appropriate symmetry. In the second approach, cell dynamics simulations of a self-assembling mesocopic system will be performed, for a three-dimensional cubic structure under shear. This will provide input to development of the analytical model, because the dynamic mechanical response will be obtained for general stresses or strains without a priori assumptions. The theoretical predictions will be compared to recent experimental results on the linear and non-linear rheology of cubic phases in concentrated surfactant and block copolymer solutions.
