Summary on Grant Application Form
We want to determine the structure that a finite element model should possess if it is to faithfully represent the character of a physical system. Then model updating can be carried out to correct the parameters of the model so that they have physical meaning. The project addresses three aspects of the model structure, namely connectivities, joint parameterization and the underlying differential equations. Theoretical tasks are described and in each case the theory is to be validated by experimental tests on structures, including a Lynx helicopter (data and f.e. models provided by DERA), Rolls-Royce aero-engine structures with complex joints, and a Ford crankshaft for which differential equation models will be produced. The project includes international collaborations with Professor M Link (Kassel), a world authority of model updating and the holder of a DFG grant on model structure determination using a different (and therefore complementary) approach, and Dr Hamid Ahmadian (Iran), an expert on inverse methods who has worked with the applicants in the past.
