Summary on Grant Application Form
An investigation into quantum theory and quantum field theory in a space-time background having spatial defects (cosmic strings etc.) will be carried out. Particular emphasis will be paid to those defects arising from orbifold constructions on sphere. The mode-problem, heat-kernal and functional determinant will be discussed for various equations of motion. The calculation will be extended to arbitrary dimensions, and also to other defect codimensions, and information about heat-kernal coefficients extracted. The system will be generalised by including a central magnetic monopole and the effect of the orbifolding on the Dirac quantization of monopole charge investigated.
