Summary on Grant Application Form |
The amino group is a ubiquitous functionality in pharmacologically active compounds and in chiral ligands and auxiliaries. However, there are few methods available for the de novo introduction of a carbon nitrogen stereocentre in an enantiocontrolled manner. The research outlined in this proposal addresses this shortfall by defining a strategy for the expeditious synthesis of chiral, non racemic amines based on a catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of a tri- or tetrasubstituted nitroalkene. The proposed programme will also involve the investigation of new, generally applicable, strategies for the synthesis of the nitroalkene precursors and the manipulation hydrogenation products to give a range of synthetic intermediates. The research will thus make valuable additional synthetic methods and intermediates available to organic chemists working in both industrial and academic laboratories and it will also provide an opportunity for the training of a postdoctoral worker in the general techniques of synthetic organic chemistry and asymmetric catalysis thus equipping them with the necessary skills to pursue a career in this area.
