Summary on Grant Application Form
Wavelet analysis is a rapidly growing area which is finding applications and consequences in many areas of mathematics, science and engineering.Recently a considerable amount of attention has been paid to exiting theoretical and methodological developments in statistics especially in curve estimation and time series analysis. Wavelet methods are extremly relevant to a wide range of potential users as they are ideal tools for the analysis of data that are non-homogeneous or non-stationary in nature. We aim to develop specific new wavelet-based methodologies in a variety of areas including: curve and surface (2D, 3D) estimation, time series analysis, deformable templates and spatial data. Particular aspects of wavelets considered will include applications of refinement schemes, non-decimated wavelet and wavelet packet transforms, lifting algorithms and complexe-valued wavelet transforms. As well as developing the compelling scientific areas above we intend to enage with variouscollaborators in science and industry to fulfil their potential. For example, texture analysis with Unilever Research, Mapping of arthritic bones with Depts of Rheumatology and Veterinary Science at Bristol University, estimating non-homogeneously distributed krill distributions with the British Antartic Survey, and predictive time series modelling with Shell Research Ltd.
