Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposals seeks support for large scale experimanetal work on the hydrodynamic damping of cylinders, to ne undertaken at the Delta Flume at Delft Hydraulics in a collaborative project which will provide separately funded acess to the tank for a period of eight weeks. The project will extend the proposers earlier work which showed that at present predictions of the motions TLPs and risers are made largely in ignorance of the levels of hydrodynamic damping that are expected in the field. In conditions closer to full scale than ever before, measurements will be made of the damping of circular and square cylinders (representing risers, columns and pontoons of TLPs) undergoing small amplitude oscillations in the presence of currents and waves. Separate tests with horizontal and vertical cylinder will enable us to identify the infulence of the free surface and of scale effects, and to predict levels of damping appropriate for a complete TLP hulll. These data will provide the basis for uniquesly authroitiative comparisons with the results of advanced computational models.
