The project involves the development of novel solid basic catalysts for the preparation of fine chemicals and intermediates. The possibilities of supporting phenolates onto silicas will lead to mild bases which will be selective in organic base catalysed transformations. The approach should allow a great degree of flexibility in terms of catalyst design, and the work will include optimised by choice of phenolate, and by selection of the appropriate support material. This aspect of the project will involve the use of MCM type materials where tight control over porosity and surface structure is possible. The catalysts will be designed to make them easily separated from the reaction mixture after reaction, and should be capable of reuse. This will be particularly important for the enantioselective catalysts where the cost of the catalysts will be high. This feature is also of importance for all the catalyst types and applications, since it would allow cleaner processes to be developed.A further advantage in one application will be the potential to separate the catalyst without the need for water, which can cause partial decomposition of the reaction products.
