Summary on Grant Application Form |
Enantioselective heterogeneous aziridination represents a key reaction in the synthesis of chiral building blocks of value for the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industry. To date, we have identified modified zeolite catalysts based on CuHY that can give e.e. of >60% for the aziridination of strene. This project seeks to investigate the mechanisms of this reaction with our novel catalysts and to identify the modification processes needed to secure an e.e. of 95% with retention of overall yield. The approach to be adopted will involve a combination of experimental studies together with molecular simulations. In particular, a range of in situ spectroscopes available at Cardiff (esr, FTIR, Raman, MAS nmr), together with in situ XRD, will be used to identify the crucial factors controlling enantioselectivity. On this basis, novel chiral modifiers will be identified and tested. This initial starting point for this work will be the study of the interaction between the oxazaline chiral modifier and Cu in both zeolite (zeolite CuHY) and mesoporous structures (CuH-MCH-41) using detailed in situ spectroscopy.
