Summary on Grant Application Form
Photorefractive ring-resonators have the unique capability of providing high amplification of weak signals and being ultra-sensitive to minute changes in their cavity length. These features have not been well explored yet. The first goal of the proposed work will be to demonstrate the required build-up of power in a ring resonator. The experimental configuration will consist of three mirrors and a novel photorefractive material, namely Rh:BaTi03, pumped by a cw Nd : YAG laser emitting light at 1064 nm. In the next stage, the sensitivity to cavity mismatch will be explored. Cavity length changes will be introduced, first by a piezo-mirror and then by placing a sample with gaseous species in the cavity. According to initial theoretical calculations, this novel configuration can sense refractive index changes as small as a few parts-per-billion. Theoretical modelling will aid the experimental frequency of the light oscillating inside the resonator. These theoretical investigations will also consider the cw tunable and the pulsed regimes, in preparation for future extension of the work.Such photorefractive ring-resonators are particularly attractive for sensing applications as they are robust, reliable, self-setting up and self-adapting.
