The recently developed multiple-quantum magic angle spinning (MQMAS) NMR experiment allows truly high-resolution NMR spectra of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei, such as 11-B, 17-O, 23-Na, 27-Al and 71-Ga, to be obtained using only conventional MAS NMR hardware. This new technique is already being used widely in both academic and industrial research environments to study minerals, glasses, zeolites and other microporous materials. We have been working on the further development of the MQMAS technique since 1995 and our research in this area has achieved international recognition. The purpose of the present proposal is to allow us to continue with this work.With the aid of a new MAS probe that generates very high radiofrequancy field strengths, we will examine methods of increasing the sensitivity of the MQMAS technique and of improving the uniformity with which nuclei in crystalligraphically-distinct sites are observed. Novel cross-polarisation techniques will be developed and applied to the MQMAS experiment with the aim of increasing both sensitivity and information content. The detailed structure of the complex ridge lineshapes seen in the MQMAS spectra of amorphous solids will be analysed in terms of the underlying molecular parameters. Further effects of the second-order quadrupolar interaction will also be investigated.
