Summary on Grant Application Form |
The primary objective of this work is to obtain a better understanding of the fundamental processes occurring during the deposition of hard carbon films using the technique of pulsed UV laser deposition (PLD). The key questions we will be addressing are what is the nature and abundance of the components of the ablation plume, what are their kinetic energies, and how do these parameters vary with process conditions. We shall do this using a state-of-the-art mass spectrometer incorporating ion energy analysis, which we shall attach to our existing PLD apparatus. The work will involve producing a number of hard carbon films using a variety of deposition conditions (laser energy and fluence, background pressure, target-substrate distance, etc), as well as target composition (graphite, perspex, delrin etc), whilst monitoring the composition of the ablation plume, as well as modelling of the film formation using a computer package (TRIM).
