Summary on Grant Application Form
Development of continuous casting refractories has traditionally been achieved by an empirical approach. However, recent advances in the use of computational modelling of thermal stresses in ceramics and improved understanding of the behaviour of ceramic-matrix composites have led to the possibility of a new approach. Through involvement in development of refractories and an interdisciplinary approach to processing, the Strathclyde Ceramics Group has developed the techniques for the materials engineering aspects. The present application combines this with input from a group who are well-known in stress analysis and design. Preliminary work has shown that the project is feasible. Information will be assembled from existing continuous casting refractories and account taken of the anisotropy inherent in the production process. This will be used to modify existing designs but the novel part of the proposals is then to adapt, through FEM calculations of temperature and stress profiles, the model to give a user-defined material for specific requirements. This provides a virtual environment in which to test the design. This information will be used to produce, with our industrial collaborators, materials and designs which will be tested in industrial production and use under steelworks conditions.
