Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposer has been invited to visit the group led by Richard Hughes at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the USA. The group have been working in the field of quantum computing and quantum cryptography for some years and have developed a working quantum cryptographic system as well as a laser-cooled ion trap for quantum computation experiments. The group at Los Alamos comprise theorists, experimental physicists and engineers and is an excellent exemplar of the type of multidisciplinary team we must put together in the UK if we are to make a successful attack on this problem. In addition to the group of Hughes at Los Alamos, Zurek and co-workers have performed ensemble quantum computing experiments using NMR. It is hoped to have a dialogue with this group in addition to the ion trap group. In may also be possible to visit the world leading ion trap group of Wineland in Boulder. This is potentially important as they are reported to be investigating the use of microtraps such as we could fabricate in the Silicon Fabrication Facility in Southampton.
