Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project as part of a wider LINK application is to develop transmission technologies which will lead towards the release of radio frequency spectrum, as the result of transferring from analogue to digital UHF television broadcasting. The participants of this consortium are the BBC, CTI , WSIL and Hymatic. Due to the differences in analogue and digital signals it has been possible to plan a network of digital transmission; which are interleaved with the analogue transmissions. However extension of digital transmissions is becoming difficu: due to the scarcity of spectrum. Many of the sites have restrictions placed upon them such that radiated power in certain directions is severely limited in order to avoid interference. The work packages that Oxford will undertake are:1. Application of HTS technology to provide low phase noise, low noise figure and low amplitude ripple recievers. 2. Transpositions of one or two channels through the use of high performance UHF filters would facilitate the use of channels which would otherwise not be available. 3. Low loss components to improve the linearity of power amplifiers. The developments outlined above may lead towards a fundamental change in the design of UHF television relay stations.
