Atoms can now be cooled to spectacularly low temperatures (micro or nano-Kelvins), far below the energy of fine and hyperfine structure. This is a completely new regime for the interaction of atoms with each other and with external fields. A particularly significant feature of cold atoms is the long de Broglie wavelength which allows them to exhibit quantum interface phenomena. The laser cooling of atoms has profoundly influenced quantum optics, atomic spectroscopy, low temperature physic, collision physics and high precision measurement. In the next decade it is likely to become significant elsewhere in physics, biology and chemistry.here we propose a rolling grant to support a co-ordinated programme of research at Sussex into the physics of cold atoms. The aims are to study fundamental problems within the field itself and also develop methods for controlling cold atoms, leading to a new technology and to novel instruments of unprecedented sensitivity and applicability. In this first grant period we will pursue four related projects : A) Experiments on geometrical and physical atom optics using magnetic surfaces, B) experiments on cold atoms confined to one and two dimensions C) Production and use of Rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate, D) related theoretical studies.
