(There is an increasing need to provide high stabilised efficiency solar cells at competitive cost for consumer products 'and for future energy needs. This proposal seeks to identify the main opportunities for maximising efficiency in p-i-n devices through a coherent programme of novel deposition, modelling and defect spectroscopy. Hot-wire deposition promises reduced metastability, but we propose to investigate further improvement in film quality and reactor economy via use of a novel low temperature catalytic method We will use a range of investigative methods (PDS, CPM, esr, TPC ) to study defect distributions and behaviour and relate this to transport, microstructure and efficiency in devices prepared by PECVD, 'conventional' hot-wire and catalytic deposition methods. Realistic computer based physical models will be used to aid transport and defect studies and will be implemented in predictive device models. Processes will be evaluated by transferring to a prototype test bed for a study of uniformity and efficiency.
