It is generally believed that the use of metaphor in graphical users interfaces is a valuable aid for understanding of abstraction by diverse populations of users. The proposed programme builds on recent research in Psychological of Programming and Thinking with Diagrams, which has suggested that this belief may be erroneous.We propose an alternative basis for analysis and generation of visual interaction paradigms, according to the principle of abstraction congruence . In the course of the programme this principle will be elaborated, and used to design and implement variations on two typical pieces of software. The benefits of these variations for different use populations will be evaluated empirically using the techniques drawn from experimental psychology. A formal description of abstraction congruence will, in addition, inform a new theory of reading notations, described as temporal contexts of access .
