This is a collaboration between 4 Univeristies active in Ti alloy MMC research, the major potential user (Rolls Royce) and the DERA Structural Materials Centre. This research project builds on the extensive research programmes on the manufacture, properties and component design of Ti MMCs conducted over the last 8 years at OCAMAC under EPSRC rolling grants, at Birmingham under the IRC programme, and at DERA SMC and Rolls Royce under MOD programmes. The objective of the new research is to provide the fundamental scientific understanding necessary for the successful manufacture, design and lifing of Ti MMC bladed rings (blings), the bling has been identified as a realistic use of MMCs in near term military engines and with longer term civil engine applications. This will be achieved by 2 RA's working on consolidation modelling and fatigue crack growth in partially reinforced components, 3 students working on consolidation experiments, internal stress measurements and microstructural damage evolution during consolidation and elevated temperature service. A further 2 students will be supported outside the project working on impact and new MMC systems. The project will work closely with Rolls Royce and DERA who are defining demonstrator components and lifing targets.
