Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal aims at investigating the origin and nature of the coherence exhibited by condensed atoms and to propose new methods by which it might be explored. In dealing with a single condensate we can either apply the statistical description or consider it to be prepared in one of the pure states forming the ensemble. We have suggested that the coherent state bases (on which the mean field description can be based) provides the most natural description because it is the most robust to environmental decoherence. In this proposal we seek to test this idea by investigating simple models of condensates which incorporate the influences of the environment in causing atoms to be ejected from the condensate. We will investigate single and coupled mode models, laser-type rate equations for Bosing and a model for the components of an atom laser
