Summary on Grant Application Form
The program of study can be divided into two clear areas. The first to study and characterise the phase diagram of poly (oxyethylene) -poly (oxybutylene) (EB) block copolymer and poly (oxyethylene) -poly (oxybutylene) -poly (oxyethylene) (EBE) triblock copolymer in aqueous solution with similar E/B rezzo and molecular weight (Mw), over a wide range of copolymer/water compositions. The purpose of this is to accurately determine the position of the phase boundaries. Later work will focus on the kinetics of the phase transformations including the effects of the different architectures. The materials will be characterised by static and dynamic light scattering, rheology and SAXS. There is a growing body of work discussing the kinetics of micelle formation, however few studies to date have examined the kinetics of transformations to the gel phase. We will extend the study to characterised different block chemistry and block architecture over the three-year period. It is envisaged that this work may require the use of synchrotron x-rays. A separate application will be submitted if this proves to be the case.
