The Thinking with Diagrams Workshop (TwD98) will attempt to directly address the lack of cohesion in the discussion as to the nature of diagrams. Through a combination of formal presentations and orchestrated discussion the workshop will pose the question as to whether we are in a position to claim that we have a science of diagrams? That is: a science which takes the nature of diagrams and their use as the central phenomena of interest; a science which is attempting to understand how diagrams differ from other representational systems and trying to develop principles for the design of effective graphical representations; a science which considers how diagrams communicate information and how they are used to solve problems. The funding requested will be used to cover the fixed costs of the workshop thereby ensuring that registration, accommodation and subsistence for the two days will be under 100, a fact that will maximise participation of researchers from the many disciplines interested in the nature of diagrams. The funding will also be used to cover the registration, accommodation and subsistence costs of ten graduate students.
