Summary on Grant Application Form |
A wide range of heavy metal species are found in the furnace and flue gases of waste incinerators. As the furnace gases cool the heavy metals condense onto the flyash particulate. There are few data on the influences of the flue gas conditions on the condensation process. The adsorption mechanism of species onto flyash as the furnace gases cool is an objective of this research proposal. An existing experimental furnace-flue gas rig is to be modified to produce vertical simulated furnace-flue gas system. Alumino-silicate substrate representative of flyash will be passed down the reactor with an upward flow of flue gases containing heavy metals and inorganic and organic heavy metal species. The adsorption of heavy metal species in relation to furnace and flue gas conditions will be determined. The results will allow the proposal of mechanism and controlling influences on the adsorption of heavy metals under waste incinerator furnace and flue gas conditions.
